After focusing on Sandy and the backgrounds, I needed to come up with the secondary character!
I really had no idea what they would look like, (and I still don't know if I'm 100% sold on their design) but I knew I wanted a boy/ masc character. With Sandy's design in mind, I tried to make a character who would compliment her. (And by compliment, I mean I basically looked at where Sandy was curved/ square, and reversed it for him [as seen in the second image]). It's a little subtle, but I think it works, and the two of them look good next to each other. I also tried to do this with their hair, Sandy's is rounded at the sides, so this new character has spikey hair that goes up.
I looked into how I was going to have their colors compliment each other. I knew I didn't want a blonde/ ginger kid, since Sandy is basically both of those colors. I wanted to give the boy a darker skin tone since Sandy is already pretty pale. (Honestly I'm pretty open to changing the colors of this new character, but I definitely think I made good progress on him in terms of his design/ silhouette.)
Also, being that this boy is a human, I wanted to differentiate them a bit more by giving him 5 fingers as opposed to Sandy's 4 and also give him an actual eye shape with white in them.
